Journey along the trail of religious objects and traditions on both sides of the border

The implementation of the project contributed to the protection of roadside shrines against destruction, which have become a permanent element of the partners' cultural heritage landscape. On the Slovak side, in Fulianka, the area at the chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was reconstructed. It is a special place for the local community, as it hosts celebrations related to the cult of the Virgin Mary. In turn, on the Polish side, renovation and conservation works were carried out at the Tombstone Monument of Christ the King in Odrzechowa, the wooden chapel of St. John of Nepomuk in Jaćmierz and the historic chapel of Christ Emanuel in Zarszyn, as well as the conservation of two figurines of the Mother of God. There were also a number of soft activities in the form of conferences, indulgence events or meetings devoted to traditions.

The main activities carried out under the project:

  • Renovation and reconstruction of infrastructure at the chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Slovakia. In Fulianka, on the path to Kapušansky Hrad, the place at the chapel of the Virgin Mary of Perpetual Help was rebuilt and adapted, where celebrations related to the Marian cult are held. The chapel was renovated and protected against rain and wind, the surface was leveled and hardened. A gazebo and a well roof were erected. Additionally, there are benches, litter bins, and a furnace cover for a bonfire.
    Renovation of roadside shrines and monuments along tourist routes in Poland. As part of the project, the tombstone of "Christ the King of 1923" was renovated entered in the register of monuments, the wooden chapel of John of Nepomuk in Jaćmierz and a roadside chapel in Zarszyn from 1900 with a wooden figure of Christ the King.
  • Polish-Slovak encounter with religious traditions. As part of the task, a number of cross-border meetings devoted to religious traditions in Poland were organized. There was a parish fair at the feet of Christ the King in Odrzechowa, which included an ecumenical mass, meetings of generations, tournaments, competitions and a Polish-Slovak handicraft fair. Subsequently, a meeting was organized devoted to the traditions related to the cult of the dead and the faith in the participation of saints in the daily life of "Autumn All Souls' Day in Zarszyn". There was also a meeting, the main theme of which was Polish-Slovak singing of Christmas carols, interspersed with a conversation moderated by members of KGW and Volunteer Fire Department on the Christmas tradition. Moreover, an inventory of chapels in the Zarszyn Commune was made in order to prepare documentation for the register of monuments.
  • Religious traditions as an element of cultural heritage. On the Slovak side, as part of the project inauguration, a thematic conference entitled "Religious traditions as an element of cultural heritage". At the renovated chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, there were indulgence ceremonies during which participants could take part in an ecumenical mass with the participation of Greek Catholic priests from Fulianka and Roman Catholic priests from the Zarszyn Commune. After the mass, there was a meeting of the participants of the indulgence with traditional dishes from Poland and Slovakia prepared by the housewives' clubs from the Zarszyn and Fulianki commune, as well as performances by choirs presenting Marian songs. A bilingual leaflet entitled "Religious traditions and customs as a treasure of cultural heritage"
  • Publication of the map and e-book entitled "Journey along the trail of religious objects on both sides of the border." As part of the task, an electronic and paper map "A journey along the trail of religious objects on both sides of the border" was issued, covering the area of the Low Beskids to Saris. It contains the most valuable religious monuments on both sides of the border and their descriptions. An e-book in three language versions was also prepared, containing photos and descriptions of 50 religious buildings on the route from the Zarszyn Commune to Fulianka.
