Geotourism as an opportunity for the development of the Polish-Slovak borderland

The towns of Gorlice and Bardejów joined forces in a project aimed at increasing the tourist attractiveness and promoting the values of the borderland. Training in geology, topography as well as knowledge of the terrain and other related natural sciences was to contribute to this. Two unique events have been prepared for residents and tourists - one on the Polish side and the other on the Slovak side. During the Light Festival in Gorlice, there were concerts of Polish and Slovak bands, a spatial laser show, fire theater and 3D mapping. In turn, a Parade with lanterns was organized in Bardejów. The project also assumed the publication of a map of geotourist attractions, which allowed for a detailed description of places and facilities attractive to tourists, with particular emphasis on objects related to crude oil and mineral waters.
The main activities carried out under the project:
- Organization of training in the field of geotourism in the Polish-Slovak border area . As part of the task, 47 people from Poland and Slovakia participated in a 3-day training in geology, topography and knowledge of the area and other related natural sciences. Classes were conducted in the form of stationary and in the form of training trips in the field. They included visits to the most important tourist sites. The speakers of the training were specialists from the tourism industry from Poland and Slovakia.
- Publication with a map of geotourist attractions in Polish and Slovak . As a result of the inventory of geotourist resources in the borderland, a publication with a map of geotourist attractions in Polish and Slovak was created. It shows the region, its wealth flowing straight from the ground and refers to the promotional slogan "City of Light" adopted by Gorlice, emphasizing the pioneering extraction of crude oil. In the Bardejów region, it refers to natural and healing mineral waters, the concentration of which is the Bardejów-Zdrój Health Resort.
- Production of an educational and promotional film and its promotion on the Polish and Slovak side . The task assumed the production of a 3-minute educational and promotional film showing the greatest geotourist attractions of the borderland, the development of the oil industry in the Gorlice Region and the history of mineral water extraction and spa activities in Bardejov. On the basis of the animated film, an advertising spot was created, which was promoted in social media and on TV on the Polish and Slovak side.
- Organization of the Light Festival in Gorlice . As part of the Festival of Light, an amazing spectacle that took viewers into a magical world full of colors, light and music, with a rich history and natural heritage in the background, among others, concerts of bands from Poland and Slovakia, spatial laser shows referring to the natural heritage and oil history of the city, fire theater, 3D mapping (audiovisual show) and a fireworks show at the end of the Festival.
- Organization of the Parade with lanterns in Bardejów , which was combined with the ceremonial closing of the multimedia fountains in the Promenade Park. The event combined two elements: fire and water. Lanterns and fire are symbols of light, love and victory. The water symbolizes the richness of Bardejov which are the mineral water springs. The event was accompanied by concerts of bands from Poland and Slovakia and a performance of a fire theater from Poland.
